Cross Border Regions

Cross-border cooperation programmes between EU member states have long been a very successful instrument for development of friendly neighbourhood relations, social and economic cohesion and reduction of regional disparities in the border regions. Neighbourhood Programmes, as another instrument of the European Union, aim at supporting and enhancing cross border cooperation at the external borders of the EU.

They are always the result of a joint programming effort of relevant national authorities and regional partners involved in the Programme. Although the border region between Serbia and Bulgaria can boast of a huge potential in both social and cultural similarities, there remains a number of challenges to be resolved, mainly in relation to segmented economy and major depopulation trends.
A CROSS-BORDER REGION is the region situated alongside any of the outer  borders of the country and it contains territories from within thecountry as well as their neighbor-territories across the border. The cross-border region of Bulgaria-Serbia is situated alongside the Bulgarian-Serbian border and there are 5 districts on the territory of the Rep. of Bulgaria and 6 districts on the territory of the Rep. of Serbia.

The districts of the Bulgarian side of the border are:
District of Vidin
District of Montana
District of Sofia
District of Pernik
District of Kyustendil

The districts of the Serbian side of the border are:
District of Bor
District of Zaječar
District of Niš
District of Pirot
District of Jablanica
District of Pčinja
